Many families spent this past sunny Saturday on the lawn at the Bishop Museum’s annual “Grow Hawaiian Festival,” presented by Hawaiian Electric Company. The museum grounds came to life with exhibits, interactive demonstrations, and entertainment, featuring performances by Kaukahi, Waipuna and Weldon Kekauoha. There was something for everyone, from keiki to kūpuna. Proud parents looked on as their little ones learned to pound poi. Many makua jumped right in and joined in the fun, learning to beat kapa, weave lau hala and make different varieties of lei. Several species of native plants were for sale, and the O’ahu Master Gardeners were eager to share their knowledge on how to garden more productively. The festival was a wonderful opportunity for all to enjoy the museum’s educational exhibits and reconnect with Hawaii’s unique cultural and natural heritage.
