Welcome to the Native Hawaiian Education Council website. We hope this site can be utilized as a resource by educators, policymakers, and all community members interested in improving the quality of education for our keiki.

The Education Council was created under the terms of the Native Hawaiian Education Act and is responsible for ‘assessing, coordinating, reporting and making recommendations’ on the status of Native Hawaiian education.



Hawaii Expected to Receive More Than $490 Million Through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012

Hawaii is expected to receive more than $490 million this fiscal year to pay for an array of initiatives including military construction, Native Hawaiian education and healthcare, highway improvements, disaster preparedness, the East West Center and other projects, Senate Committee on Appropriations Chairman Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Representative Mazie K. Hirono, and U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa announced today.

New Guidance Supports Voluntary Efforts to Promote Diversity and Reduce Racial Isolation in Education

The U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice are jointly issuing guidance that explains how educational institutions can lawfully pursue voluntary policies to achieve diversity or avoid racial isolation within the framework of Titles IV and VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and current case law.

Native Hawaiian Education Grantees Announced

Twenty three education initiatives that cater to the unique needs of Native Hawaiian students will receive $13,364,065 to help continue, expand and improve an array of programs, Senator Daniel K.
